Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Model Use?
Nissan has used several different key technologies across its model lineup over the years, and the type of key your vehicle uses directly affects how the replacement is made. Older Nissan models use a basic laser-cut or double-sided mechanical key with no electronics at all — straightforward to duplicate but still requiring precise cutting to match your door and ignition. From the mid-2000s onward, most Nissans adopted transponder keys, which contain a small chip inside the key head that must be programmed to communicate with the car's immobilizer system. Without that programming, the key will turn in the ignition but the engine will not start.
More recent models — including many Altima, Rogue, Murano, and Maxima trims — use key fobs with remote entry buttons, or fully proximity-based smart keys that allow push-button start without inserting anything into the ignition. Each of these requires different equipment and programming procedures. Our technicians carry the tools to handle all of these configurations, and we identify your exact key type before quoting so you know precisely what the job involves.
